VHSL Scholarships

Heisman High School Scholarship

  • Information:

    • The 2022 Heisman High School Scholarship is now open! This year, The Heisman Trophy Trust is proud to award $128,000 in scholarships to the nation’s most accomplished and community-minded male and female senior scholar-athletes. With winners from every school, 100 State Winners, 10 of whom go on to be National Finalists, of which two are declared National Winners. Your graduating seniors have many ways to join the ranks of more than 600,000 past winners.

Harry F. Byrd Jr. Leadership Award

  • Information:

    • Established by Senator Byrd in 1994, this program rewards high school students who demonstrate academic accomplishment and embody excellence in character, leadership, and good citizenship. The ideal nominee may not necessarily be a student with one of the highest GPAs.

  • Information:

Auto Accident Scholarship

Hagan Scholarship Foundation

  • Information:

    • The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide four-year need-based merit scholarship providing each recipient with the opportunity to graduate college debt-free

  • Eligibility

    • 1. Must be a U.S. Citizen.

    • 2. Must attend an Eligible Public High School (ACS is eligible).

    • 3. Must have achieved a 3.50 Cumulative Grade Point Average.

    • 4. Must enroll at an Eligible Four-Year College or University the first semester following high school graduation.

    • 5. Must maintain a four-year or less graduation schedule in college.

    • 6. Must work 240 hours each year, from January 1 until commencement of the fall semester in college. Employment must be regularly scheduled work performed under supervision for compensation.

    • 7. Applicant’s Adjusted Gross Household Income reported for Federal Income Tax Purposes must not exceed $85,000.

    • 8. Must provide a complete copy of the FAFSA SAR showing the EFC.

    • 9. Must apply for Federal and State grants if eligible.

    • 10. Must not have a felony conviction.

Jefferson or Walentas Scholarship

  • Information:

    • The Jefferson and Walentas Scholarships feature two similar yet distinct selection processes designed to allow students to showcase their excellence in leadership, citizenship, and scholarship (This is exclusively for the University of Virginia).

  • Amount

    • The Jefferson and Walentas Scholarships provide the entire cost of attendance at the University of Virginia and many supplemental enrichment experiences. The total value of each Scholarship exceeds $333,000 for non-Virginian students and $177,000 for Virginia students.

George E. Allen Academic Scholarship

John R. Lillard Foundation, Inc. Aviation Scholarship Program Application

  • Information:

    • Please visit the Virginia Department of Aviation’s website (www.doav.virginia.gov) to view the scholarship. In order for your application to be considered, you must be a Virginia high school senior, have at least a 3.50 unweighted GPA; be planning a career in the field of aviation, and must be enrolled or accepted into an aviation-related program at an accredited college. It is also necessary for you to:

      • 1. Complete the attached application.

      • 2. Have your guidance counselor or other high school official sign all required certifications.

      • 3. Attach an official copy of your current high school transcript and a copy of acceptance letters or other verification of enrollment or acceptance into a post-secondary institution.

      • 4. Attach to the application a typed, double-spaced essay (350 word minimum/500 word maximum) on the subject: "Why I Wish to Pursue a Career in Aviation"

Barnard Family Health & Wellness Scholarship

  • Information: One or two scholarships will be awarded by the Barnard Family Health & Wellness Scholarship Committee. Amounts are dependent on the funds generated for distribution each year. Investments are handled by The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation.

    • Applicant must submit the following items:

      • 1. Completed application form (if handwritten, please print legibly)

      • 2. Two letters of recommendation from a high school teacher/mentor, administrator, counselor, employer, or individual with significant knowledge of applicant’s experience and involvement. Must

      • be in a sealed envelope or emailed from the individual or counseling department.

      • 3. An official and recent high school transcript with cumulative grade point average and a class standing/rank. Must show official markings, be in a sealed envelope, or emailed directly from the counseling/registrar office.

      • 4. Personal Essay: What has caused your passion in the health and wellness field and what specifically would you like to accomplish in the field of health and wellness?

      • 5. Possible oral interview with a Scholarship Committee member if you are selected as a finalist.
